Autumn does not begin when the calendar says September.

From an epidemiological perspective, preparation starts earlier.

Influenza surveillance needs to be ready.

Vaccination programmes need planning.

Laboratories need capacity.

Sentinel systems need to function.

And researchers need to know what questions they are trying to answer before the next wave of data arrives.

That last part is easy to underestimate.

Good epidemiological work rarely starts with:

“Here is a dataset. What can we find?”

It starts with a question.

What outcome are we interested in?

Which population?

What exposure?

What comparison?

Which data can actually answer the question?

What sources of bias should we expect?

What analytical approach is appropriate?

Sometimes the next step is statistical analysis.

Sometimes it is mathematical modelling.

Sometimes the challenge is much simpler — but no less important: interpreting what the results actually tell us, and what they do not.

This is where epidemiology becomes more than data analysis.

It is about turning a public health question into a study that can produce useful evidence.
